The Challenge of Recycling Soft PVC

Recycling soft PVC, like the vinyl used for graphics, is tough. Like plastic bags, vinyl isn’t usually recyclable, and the systems to support its recycling are still developing. This creates a big problem for industries that depend on vinyl, as the waste keeps growing.

Putting it into Context

The UK registers over 350,000 new light commercial vehicles every year. If each vehicle uses five square metres of vinyl graphics, that totals 3.5 million square metres of vinyl waste and backing paper annually.

With the aim of zero waste, HEX Graphics is working with supply chain partners, such as Metamark, to repurpose vinyl waste into new products like luxury notebooks and other paper goods. Instead of letting vinyl waste end up in landfills, we have found ways to turn it into useful items, reducing its environmental impact.

The Recycling Process: From Waste to New Products

Lining paper is key to making vinyl graphics stick to surfaces. This paper is coated in polyurethane, a plastic that acts as an adhesive. However, to recycle the lining paper, the polyurethane has to be removed as it acts as a contaminant.

To do this, waste from the vinyl lining paper goes to James Cropper, a UK papermaking specialist, where the polyurethane elements are removed to extract the raw paper.

James Cropper is responsible for the treatment and production of goods made from recycled lining paper, such as paper poppies, luxury packaging, and other paper goods.

In addition to producing their own products for resale, James Cropper also sends a quantity of the paper they have recycled to a second UK manufacturer to produce luxury notepads, which has emerged as The Vinly360 ‘MiPad’, where every element can be recycled again.

A Simple Solution for Reducing Waste

Paper waste that would normally end up in landfills or be incinerated is now being repurposed, with zero waste going to landfills. In today’s world, it’s crucial for businesses in all industries, including the automotive sector, to focus on reducing their carbon emissions. By choosing recycled materials, companies can automatically cut down their carbon footprint, contributing to a greener future.
